What is Strong Authentication?
Strong Authentication (SA) is a level of security added on to the log in process used to manage your card online. Strong Authentication includes:
- Personal user ID and password.
- Challenge questions to verify that it is you who are logging in.
- Picture and personal phrase for website authentication.
- PC registration.
What is a challenge question?
A challenge question asks for a specific piece of personal information that only you would know. These questions are used to help SA verify your identity and authority to access your account information.
What is website authentication?
When you set up your online account, you will be asked to select a picture and type in a personal phrase. These personal choices are displayed each time you log in to the website so that you can see the website is the authentic site where you originally entered your personal and account information. Website authentication is a program that lets you know you are on the real MAGIC card website.
What is PC registration?
PC registration is the last step in the SA enrollment process. If the computer you use to log in is your personal computer (or a computer that you feel is safe for you to enter and view your personal information on a regular basis), you can choose to register your computer with SA. When you do this, SA and the MAGIC card website place a cookie on your computer. Each time you log in, the website looks for the cookie. If the cookie is there, you do not have to answer additional challenge questions when you enter your user ID and password. If the cookie is not there, you will need to answer challenge questions so that we know it is you trying to access your account.
Why do I need to enroll in Strong Authentication?
SA is additional security for your personal information, such as your full name, address, telephone number and social security number. The additional level of security helps to keep your personal and financial information secure.
For general information about SA, you can read a series of documents from the Federal Financial Institution Examination Council (FFIEC) on their website: https://www.ffiec.gov/press/pr101205.htm.
